10 Signs Your Roof Needs Attention Before Storm Season

Texas storm season can turn a minor roof problem into a major repair overnight. The good news is that most roof failures give plenty of warning. Here are the ten signs our inspectors see most often, and what to do about each.

What you can spot from the ground

1. Curling or cupping shingles. Heat and age cause edges to lift, which lets wind get underneath.
2. Missing shingles. Even one missing tab exposes the underlayment to UV and water.
3. Dark streaks or bald spots. Heavy granule loss means the asphalt is exposed and aging fast.
4. Sagging rooflines. A dip in the ridge can point to rotted decking or structural issues.
5. Rusted or loose flashing around chimneys, skylights and walls.

What you'll find inside and around the house

6. Granules in the gutters that look like coarse black sand.
7. Water stains on ceilings or at the top of exterior walls.
8. Daylight in the attic through the roof boards.
9. Higher cooling bills that can point to poor ventilation.
10. Cracked pipe boots, one of the most common sources of leaks we repair.
